Mr. Dufree discussed the structure of the Democratic Party at the local level and the various ways each and every one of you may participate in formulating the Democratic Party's agenda and platform for the future. Some of the interesting facts Mr. Dufree provided were regarding the political makeup of San Diego County. As many of you may have heard, San Diego is often referred to as a Republican stronghold. However, the facts prove otherwise. For example, there are 605,000 registered Republicans in the County of San Diego. In contrast, there are 524,000 registered Democrats. That is a difference of 81,000 registered voters. 330,000 registered voters declined to state their political party affiliation. Mr. Dufree stated that this group statistically votes Democratic. To further emphasize how close the divide is on our county, there are only 93 more registered Republicans in Del Mar than Democrats. 93 registered voters! There are 1,000 more registered Republicans in La Mesa than Democrats. However, in the City of San Diego the registered Democrats out number the Republicans by 40,000 registered voters. All of the South Bay cities are predominately Democratic as well. Mr. Dufree stated that the Democratic party needs to get over its inferiority complex in San Diego County. There is a shortage of people willing to run for elected office under the Democratic ticket. He stated that 98 Republicans were elected to local positions last election compared to 28 Democrats. However, this gap was due to many of the Republicans running unopposed. Mr. Dufree stated that the DNC's goal for the future is to develop a clear message (a 30 second elevator speech). He further stated that some of the largest donors to Democratic Party candidates are local, and most live in La Jolla. The DNC has also developed a radio program to be aired weekly on Mondays from 5pm to 6 pm on 1040 AM. |
